The verb
brauchen means to need: Ich brauche Hilfe. Wie lange brauchst du? (How long does it take you?) It also works with zu and a negative: Du brauchst nicht zu kommen (You don't have to come).
- Regular: past brauchte; done form gebraucht; the perfect uses haben.
- nicht brauchen + zu + infinitive = don't have to: Du brauchst nicht zu kommen.
- Wie lange brauchst du? = How long will it take you?
- Forms you will meet: braucht, brauchst, brauche, brauchte, gebraucht, brauchst ... zu, zu brauchen.

The done form (Partizip II) is gebraucht (also an adjective: ein gebrauchtes Auto = a second-hand car).

Word order
Meine Oma braucht Hilfe.
Statement: the verb is in second place.
Brauchst du das noch?
Question: the verb is first.
Ich weiß, dass er Hilfe braucht.
After dass: braucht goes to the end.
Du brauchst nicht zu kommen.
brauchen + nicht + zu + infinitive.
Ich habe das nicht gebraucht.
Perfect: habe second, gebraucht at the end.
Ich weiß nicht, wie lange er gebraucht hat.
After wie lange: gebraucht hat (the helper comes last).
In long sentences, find the helper near the front and the verb at the end of that part. Extra information between commas can wait.
