The verb
müssen means must and to have to. It is a modal verb: it works with a second verb that goes to the end. Careful: nicht müssen means don't have to, not must not.
- Modal verbs have no ending for ich and er / sie / es: ich muss, er muss.
- The ü disappears in the singular: muss, musst, muss.
- Past: musste. Softer advice: müsste / müssten.
- nicht müssen = don't have to · nicht dürfen = must not.

The done form (Partizip II) is gemusst (with another verb the perfect uses müssen: ich habe arbeiten müssen).

Present: I have to work.
Ich musste arbeiten.
Past: I had to work.

Perfect: I had to work (modal at the end).

Word order
