The verb
können means can, to be able to, and to know how to (Ich kann Deutsch). It is a modal verb: it works with a second verb that goes to the end.
- Modal verbs have no ending for ich and er / sie / es: ich kann, er kann.
- The vowel changes in the singular: kann, kannst, kann.
- Past: konnte. Polite and imagined: könnte / könnten.
- Forms you will meet: kann, kannst, können, konnte, könnte, gekonnt, kommen kann, zu können.

The done form (Partizip II) is gekonnt (with another verb the perfect uses können: ich habe nicht kommen können).
Look-alikes: können is wir and sie / Sie; konnte is ich and er / sie / es; könnte (with ö) is the imagined form.
Tenses
Ich kann schwimmen.
Present: I can swim.
Ich konnte schwimmen.
Past: I could swim.
Ich habe nicht kommen können.
Perfect: I couldn't come (two infinitive-looking words at the end).
Ich werde bald schwimmen können.
Future: I will be able to swim soon.
Ich könnte schwimmen.
Imagined: I could swim.
Word order
Du kannst heute kommen.
kannst is second; the other verb is at the end.
Kannst du mir helfen?
Question: kannst is first.
Ich weiß, dass er heute nicht kommen kann.
After dass: kommen kann (the modal comes last).
Ich freue mich, dir helfen zu können.
zu können at the end.
Wegen der Arbeit konnte er nicht kommen.
Past: konnte is second.
In long sentences, find the helper near the front and the verb at the end of that part. Extra information between commas can wait.

Permission (informal).
Das kann sein.
Possibility: that could be.
