The verb

dürfen means may and to be allowed to. It is a modal verb: it works with a second verb that goes to the end. nicht dürfen means must not (forbidden).

  • Modal verbs have no ending for ich and er / sie / es: ich darf, er darf.
  • The ü becomes a in the singular: darf, darfst, darf.
  • Past: durfte. Probably: dürfte.
  • nicht dürfen = must not · nicht müssen = don't have to.
How this page works: ten words, ten questions. Every word answers exactly one question and turns gray once used. If you are unsure, open this tutorial and come back.
