The verb
nehmen means to take. It is also how you take transport (den Bus nehmen), order food (Ich nehme einen Kaffee), take medicine (Tabletten nehmen) and take your time (Nimm dir Zeit!).
- Stem change e to i: du nimmst, er nimmt; the h drops out and m doubles.
- Past: nahm; done form: genommen; the perfect uses haben.
- It builds many verbs with a little word: mitnehmen, annehmen, abnehmen, zunehmen, aufnehmen.
- Forms you will meet: nimmt, nimmst, nahm, Nimm!, genommen, zu nehmen, nimmst ... mit.

Tenses

Past: I took the bus (stories, writing).

Perfect: I took the bus (spoken).

Past perfect: I had taken the bus.
Ich werde den Bus nehmen.
Future: I will take the bus.
Ich würde den Bus nehmen.
Imagined: I would take the bus.
Word order
Er nimmt den Bus.
Statement: the verb is in second place.
Nimmst du Zucker?
Question: the verb is first.
Ich weiß, dass er den Bus nimmt.
After dass: nimmt goes to the end.
Ich habe den Bus genommen.
Perfect: habe second, genommen at the end.
Ich habe vergessen, meine Tabletten zu nehmen.
zu nehmen at the end.
Ich weiß nicht, was er genommen hat.
After was: genommen hat (the helper comes last).
In long sentences, find the helper near the front and the verb at the end of that part. Extra information between commas can wait.

- In a normal sentence the little word runs to the end: Nimmst du mich mit?
- Done form: ge goes inside: mitgenommen, abgenommen.
- With zu: zu goes inside: Es ist nett, mich mitzunehmen.
- teilnehmen (to take part) is covered as its own verb.
