The verb
wissen means to know a fact. Use kennen for people and places, and können for skills. It is behind some of the most frequent sentences: Ich weiß nicht. Woher weißt du das? Weißt du, wo er ist?
- Irregular, like a modal verb: no ending for ich and er / sie / es: ich weiß, er weiß.
- Past: wusste; done form: gewusst; the perfect uses haben.
- wissen + dass / ob / wo / wann ... sends the verb to the end of that clause.
- Forms you will meet: weiß, weißt, wisst, wusste, gewusst, zu wissen, gewusst hat, wüsste.

Look-alikes: weiß is ich and er / sie / es; wissen is wir and sie / Sie; wisst is ihr; wusste is ich and er / sie / es in the past; wüsste (with ü) is the imagined form.
Tenses
Ich weiß die Antwort.
Present: I know the answer.
Ich wusste die Antwort.
Past: I knew the answer.
Ich habe es nicht gewusst.
Perfect: I didn't know it.
Ich werde es morgen wissen.
Future: I will know tomorrow.
Wenn ich das wüsste, würde ich es sagen.
Imagined: If I knew that, I would say it.
Ich hätte es gewusst.
Imagined past: I would have known.
Word order
Er weiß alles.
Statement: the verb is in second place.
Weißt du das?
Question: the verb is first.
Ich weiß, dass er kommt.
After dass: kommt goes to the end; weiß stays second.
Ich weiß nicht, ob sie es gewusst hat.
After ob: gewusst hat (the helper comes last).

A question that contains a question: wo er wohnt (verb at the end).
In long sentences, find the helper near the front and the verb at the end of that part. Extra information between commas can wait.
