The verb
sagen means to say and to tell. It is a regular verb, and it introduces what someone says: Er sagt, dass er müde ist.
- Regular: the stem sag- never changes.
- The perfect uses haben: ich habe gesagt.
- After sagen, a dass-clause sends the verb to the end.
- Forms you will meet: sagt, sagte, sagst, Sag!, gesagt, gesagt hat, zu sagen, würde sagen.

The done form (Partizip II) is gesagt.
Look-alikes: sagt is er / sie / es and ihr; sagen is wir and sie / Sie; sagte is ich and er / sie / es in the past.
Tenses
Er sagt die Wahrheit.
Present: He tells the truth.
Er sagte die Wahrheit.
Past: He told the truth (stories, writing).
Er hat die Wahrheit gesagt.
Perfect: He told the truth (spoken past).
Er hatte nichts gesagt.
Past perfect: He had said nothing.
Er wird es sagen.
Future: He will say it.
Er würde es sagen.
Imagined: He would say it.
Word order
Er sagt die Wahrheit.
Statement: the verb is in second place.
Sagst du mir deinen Namen?
Question: the verb is first.
Er sagt, dass er müde ist.
After dass: the verb goes to the end.
Ich habe ihm Bescheid gesagt.
Perfect: habe is second, gesagt at the end.
Ich weiß nicht, was er gesagt hat.
After was: gesagt hat (the helper comes last).
Ich habe keine Lust, das noch einmal zu sagen.
zu and sagen sit together at the end.
In long sentences, find the helper near the front and the verb at the end of that part. Extra information between commas can wait.
