Reference: wollen conjugation, tenses and meanings

The verb

wollen means to want (to). It is a modal verb: it works with a second verb that goes to the end. It looks like the English 'will', but it does not mean the future.

  • Modal verbs have no ending for ich and er / sie / es: ich will, er will.
  • will = want, not 'will' (the future uses werden).
  • Past: wollte = wanted to, meant to.
  • A polite wish uses möchte (from mögen), not will: Ich möchte einen Kaffee.
