The verb

sein means to be. It is the most common German verb, and also a helper: it forms the perfect of verbs of movement and change (ich bin gegangen).

  • Highly irregular: bin - bist - ist - sind - seid - sind.
  • In speech the past is almost always war, not ist gewesen.
  • Helper for the perfect of many verbs: ich bin gekommen, er ist gefahren.
  • Forms you will meet: ist, war, sind, seid, Sei!, wäre, zu sein, gewesen ist ...
How this page works: ten words, ten questions. Every word answers exactly one question and turns gray once used. If you are unsure, open this tutorial and come back.
