The verb

verstehen means to understand: Ich verstehe dich nicht. Verstehst du Deutsch? Wir verstehen uns gut (we get along). It starts with the prefix ver-, so it is inseparable and the done form has no ge-: verstanden.

  • Inseparable verb: it never splits, and there is no ge- in the done form: verstanden.
  • Past: verstand; the perfect uses haben: ich habe verstanden.
  • sich verstehen = to get along · nichts verstehen von = to know nothing about.
  • Forms you will meet: versteht, verstehst, verstand, Versteh!, verstanden, zu verstehen, verstanden hat, hätte verstanden.
How this page works: ten words, ten questions. Every word answers exactly one question and turns gray once used. If you are unsure, open this tutorial and come back.

Commands: Versteh! (to one person) · Versteht! (to several) · Verstehen Sie! (polite) · Verstehen wir!

The done form (Partizip II) is verstanden (no ge-).

Look-alikes: versteht is er / sie / es and ihr; verstehen is wir and sie / Sie; verstanden is both the done form and the past of wir / sie, so the helper (habe, hat ...) tells you which one it is.
