Reference: bekommen conjugation, tenses and meanings

The verb

bekommen means to get and to receive: Ich bekomme einen Brief. Careful: it does not mean 'to become' (that is werden). It is also in everyday phrases: Hunger bekommen (to get hungry), ein Baby bekommen (to have a baby).

  • False friend: bekommen = to get, not to become.
  • Irregular like kommen: past bekam; done form bekommen (no ge-: be- is inseparable).
  • The perfect uses haben: ich habe bekommen.
  • Forms you will meet: bekommt, bekommst, bekomme, bekam, bekommen, zu bekommen, bekommen hat, bekäme.
How this page works: ten words, ten questions. Every word answers exactly one question and turns gray once used. If you are unsure, open this tutorial and come back.
